UN warns: 400,000 migrants may cross the border

The United Nations Organization (UN) reported that the number of irregular migrants trying to cross the Darien Gap, which is the route of irregular migrants on the border of the Central American country Panama and the South American country Colombia, may reach this year 400 thousand.

According to the report prepared by the UN refugee and migration offices, an estimated 100,000 people have passed through the Darien Gap since the beginning of the year, and this figure is six times higher than the same period last year. It is estimated that the number of migrants passing through the Darien Gap this year may increase to 400,000.
If one takes into account that last year an estimated 250,000 immigrants traveled through this route, a significant increase is striking.
The United States is committed to supporting Colombia and Panama in intelligence gathering to eliminate smuggling networks operating in the Darién Gap.

JOURNEY OF HOPE UNDER DANGER

Darien Gap, a wildlife sanctuary covered in forests, swamps and mountains, is a dangerous route for migrants to pass through.

The opening, which is the only point where the Pan-American Highway connecting North and South America intersects, can only be crossed on foot along forest paths. Migrants travel in danger of being trapped in the swamp and attacked by wild animals. (AA)
