Tension over hijab in Iran: they will watch women on camera
A new step has come from the government of Iran, where many women have been protesting the requirement to wear a headscarf in recent months.
The Iranian government, threatening to impose heavy penalties on women who refuse to wear the hijab, is placing cameras on the streets to track the women. In the Iranian police statement, it was stated that women who have violated the veil rule with cameras “will receive the necessary punishment”.
Iranian police also called on the public to protect the headscarf rule and warn women who do not comply with it. In the statement, it was noted that this step is aimed at preventing increasing violations against the headscarf requirement, and that the headscarf is one of the fundamental values of the country.
The death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after she was arrested in the capital Tehran in September “for not wearing the headscarf properly” sparked the biggest protests in recent years in Iran. Iranian women who led the demonstrations defied the Islamic administration by removing their headscarves, and many people lost their lives in the act.
