The EU condemns the decision of the Taliban on women

The European Union (EU) condemned the Taliban’s ban on women working with the United Nations (UN) in Afghanistan.

In a statement on behalf of the EU, Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Relations and Security Policy, said that this decision, taken after previous similar bans, worsens the situation of women and girls and violates the right humanitarian international. After pointing out that they condemned this decision by the Taliban, Borrell stated that the economic and humanitarian crisis in the country, where 28 million people, representing nearly two-thirds of the population, need humanitarian aid, has reached its peak.

Borrell called on the Taliban to drop the decision and demanded that women and girls regain educational equality and their right to participate in other spheres of society, and that the Taliban honor their promises to respect human rights.

TALIBAN RESPONSIBLE BANS

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) stated that in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan, Afghan female UN staff were prevented from going to work and stated: “We would like to remind the authorities that the UN cannot work without female staff and cannot provide life-saving assistance.

Following the decision to suspend the education of female students, the Taliban suspended the employment of female staff in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) on December 24, 2022 until further notice. It was noted that the licenses of NGOs that did not dismiss female staff would be revoked.

Immediately afterwards, some international aid organizations in the country such as Save The Children, the Norwegian Refugee Council and CARE stopped their work. The decision of the Taliban came from the European Union, the UN, the United States and many countries. (AA)
