NATO: China’s arms supply to Russia would be a “historic mistake”

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the allies agreed it would be a “historic mistake” for China to provide arms assistance to Russia.

Stoltenberg held a press conference at the end of the two-day NATO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. Stating that the Allies welcome Finland’s membership, Stoltenberg said: “The Allies also agree that Sweden should become a member as soon as possible.”

Stating that short- and long-term military support for Ukraine was discussed in detail at the meeting, Stoltenberg said the “future of the country lies in NATO.” Asked when Ukraine will become a member, Stoltenberg noted that this depends on the country being independent and democratic, but now that these criteria are not met as it is under attack from Russia.

Stoltenberg said they discussed China’s growing cooperation with Russia at the meeting, which was also attended by partner countries from the Asia-Pacific region. Stating that China refused to condemn Russia’s aggression, supported its economy, mirrored Russian propaganda and accelerated bilateral military activities in the Asia-Pacific region, Stoltenberg said the allies said China’s military assistance to Russia it would be a “historic mistake” with profound consequences. He said it was clear.

“We do not see China as an enemy, but we made it clear in the Strategic Concept document that China’s assertive behavior challenges our interests, values and security,” Stoltenberg said. (AA)
