The UK is earmarking more than £1 billion for the plans. The most important novelty consists in the fact that physical inspection is no longer required for many types of goods. For the actually necessary checks, the goods will henceforth be referred to locations outside the ports, so that there are no delays at the border.
The new plan is approved by the British Operational model of the border target and brings the UK ‘closer to the goal of creating the most effective border in the world’, according to a government statement. “We are hereby introducing an improved system for sanitary, phytosanitary and safety checks on imported goods.”

The British government also wants to look into the possibilities of a so-called unique commercial window, where professionals only need to provide their information once in one place. The British want to start using that system in 2027.
It remains to be seen whether the new rules will also affect goods to and from Northern Ireland. Earlier this year, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak struck another deal with the European Union on post-Brexit trade between the two countries, and that deal remains in place. However, goods from the EU destined for Northern Ireland are not subject to the new rules. This means that the country maintains a full connection with the European internal market.
