Controversial decision in Iran: no education for those who do not wear a headscarf

Students who do not comply with the mandatory headscarf rule in Iran’s universities and high schools will not be allowed to receive education.

According to Iranian media, the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, to which higher education institutions are affiliated, and the Ministry of National Education have issued separate announcements on the matter. In the statement of both ministries it was indicated that students who do not comply with the veil law will not be able to benefit from education.

Protests erupted across the country in September last year in Iran after 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died after being detained by moral police. During the protests, the demands to relax the mandatory veil law, which has been implemented since 1979, came to the fore again.

After the demonstrations that lasted about 4 months, there are criticisms that women in some cities do not comply with the rules of the mandatory use of the veil. While it is seen on social networks that some women in the country walk uncovered through the streets and workplaces, the pro-regime conservatives, who have been disturbed by this situation lately, have been reacting to the situation and calling on the authorities to do meet the standards.
