The English ban comes from the right-wing PM
According to national press reports, MP Fabio Rampelli of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s FdI party has submitted a bill to the lower house of parliament, the House of Representatives, with the aim of guaranteeing the use of the Italian language in the administration public, “to save and protect from extinction”.
It was stated that although the bill covers all foreign languages, it is especially targeted at the use of English words that reduce the value of the Italian language.
The bill, which will be discussed in parliament, requires those who will work in the public sector to have a good command of the Italian language, both in writing and verbally, and aims to ban the use of English in official correspondence, including the job. titles and abbreviations of private companies operating in the country.
If the bill becomes law, fines ranging from 5,000 euros to 100,000 euros are foreseen for those who violate these regulations.
Speaking to the Corriere della Sera newspaper, Rampelli pointed out that this bill was intended to prevent some names in laws from being mentioned by names in English, as well as in correspondence in public and private institutions.
Rampelli, when asked how this bill came about, said: “There are two reasons. First, citizens have the right to understand, otherwise there is no democracy. Secondly, it is clear that the processes of globalization almost everywhere endanger mother tongues”. (AA)
