132 irregular immigrants disappeared off Tunisia
The Tunisian Economic and Social Rights Forum has published a report on irregular migrants and irregular migration initiatives in Tunisia.
In the report, which indicated that 132 migrants disappeared in the first 3 months of 2023, it was stated that 1,771 irregular migrants, including 348 children and 121 women, arrived in Italy by boat.
The report notes that the majority of irregular migrants arriving in Italy come from sub-Saharan African countries, and 14,082 people were detained in irregular migration attempts that were blocked as a result of security force operations.
The report noted that this year, compared to previous years, the number of irregular migration attempts doubled.
FOUND BODY OF 29 IRREGULAR MIGRATION
The spokesman for the National Security Forces, Husameddin al-Jababli, announced on March 26 that 29 bodies of irregular migrants were found off the southern coast of Tunisia and that 11 migrants were rescued.
Sfax court judicial officer Fevzi Mesmudi said in a statement on March 24 that 5 boats carrying irregular migrants capsized off Tunis in 48 hours, 4 people were rescued and search and rescue efforts continued for dozens of people.
Every year, thousands of irregular African migrants arrive in Tunisia to reach Europe via the Mediterranean in the hope of a better life.
Some of the immigrants from sub-Saharan African countries, who have lived in Tunisian immigrant slums for many years, manage to reach Europe, while others die at sea. (AA)
