‘Hostile attitude’ costs Sweden provisional NATO membership Related articles

Due to years of ‘hostile’ behavior by Sweden, Hungary postpones the vote on the Scandinavian country’s admission to NATO. Due to “a large number of grievances” over Sweden’s criticism of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s policies, the government does not intend to allow the vote. A spokesman for the Hungarian government says so.

The spokesman says Sweden has “repeatedly criticized Hungary through diplomatic channels”. Furthermore, the Swedes allegedly used their political influence to harm Hungarian interests. Reference is made to the criticism of the erosion of the rule of law in Hungary.

Turkey is also blocking entry

Only after a meeting with Stockholm to bridge the gap between the two governments, Hungary wants to reflect further on the ratification of Sweden’s membership. Finland, which applied to join NATO at the same time as Sweden, has already received the green light from Budapest. Furthermore, all other NATO members have already approved the admission of the two countries. Only Turkey is still holding back both countries. However, approval appears to be coming quickly for Finland now that Turkish President Erdogan has withdrawn his objections.

The Ankara government opposes Swedish membership of NATO because it does not agree with Stockholm’s treatment of groups considered terrorists in Turkey.
