Blinken summoned to testify on Afghanistan
Investigating the Joe Biden administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan, committee chair McCaul asked Blinken to brief the committee on the classified document sent to the State Department in July 2021 by diplomats stationed in Afghanistan, noting that the situation in Afghanistan was deteriorating rapidly.
McCaul said they made “many well-intentioned attempts to see this critical document.”
WHAT HAPPENED?
Defending the view that the American people should know this information, McCaul said in the previous parliamentary session: “In the midst of the chaos that unfolded in Kabul in August 2021, the US State Department was almost useless.” he had used the phrase.
According to US media reports, State Department officials informed the Committee last week that they may attend a session to brief the Committee on the content of the document in question.
The US presence in Afghanistan, which began on October 7, 2001, ended after 20 years with the completion of its troop withdrawal from Afghanistan on August 31, 2021.
What happened during the process of withdrawing from Afghanistan and leaving behind the Afghans who cooperated with the US remains on the agenda of the American public. (AA)
