The UN’s reaction to Russia
The spokesman for the UN Secretary General, Stephane Dujarric, told a daily news conference that the escalation of tensions over nuclear weapons is worrying.
Stating that the nuclear risks are very high, Dujarric stressed that all kinds of miscalculations or actions that increase tension must be avoided.
“All member states must comply with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty,” Dujarric said. They must comply with the responsibilities and obligations of the treaty.” he said.
THE MEETING WILL BE HELD THIS WEEK
Regarding Ukraine’s call for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, Dujarric shared the information that the meeting will take place this week.
Russian President Vladimir Putin declared on March 25 that they will place tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus: “We will do this without violating our international obligations on non-proliferation.” he said.
NATO and the European Union (EU) declared that they found Russia’s decision “irresponsible”.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry also called for an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council. (AA)
