Taiwan confirmed on Sunday that decades-long ties with the Central American country have been severed. The island, which China considers a renegade province, has removed the Honduran flag from Taiwan’s foreign ministry.
Tapei had previously decided to recall the ambassador, irritated by an official visit by the Honduran foreign minister to Beijing to strengthen ties with China. Honduras was one of fourteen countries that officially recognize Taiwan.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman announced via Twitter on Sunday that the country has established diplomatic ties with Honduras. The announcement comes hours after Honduras cut ties with Taiwan.
