Holiday camps and student accommodation were previously seen as possible shelters but now don’t seem like a viable option, according to Sky News, although it has been made clear that the government wants to end the use of hotels as shelters for asylum seekers.

Transparent

“We have always been transparent about the unprecedented pressure on our asylum system,” an interior ministry spokesman said. “That pressure is caused by a significant increase in dangerous and illegal attempts to enter our country. As a government, we will continue to work with local authorities to create a range of housing.’

Earlier this month, the British parliament debated a controversial asylum law, which could be used to curb illegal immigration. Among other things, the new law allows irregular migrants to be held for 28 days until expulsion, without any judicial control.
