The strike was called by the major trade unions Verdi and EVG. Unions are demanding significantly higher wages and better working conditions. About 38% of respondents said they disagreed with the move and the rest expressed no opinion. Inland navigation and motorway operators would also participate in the action, which could mean that the tunnels may have to be partially closed.

Immediate consequences

Furthermore, 69% of respondents said they do not expect the strike to have direct consequences for them personally. A fifth said they could be affected for using public transport.

Recently there have been regular strikes at German airports by, among others, security guards and ground staff, seriously disrupting air traffic. Monday’s strike could affect 380,000 air passengers, airport defense group ADV said.

The NS has already said that there will be no international trains to and from Germany on Monday. Night trains to Austria and Switzerland are also not in operation.
