Southern Cyprus leader: we must turn the elections in Turkey into an opportunity

The new president of the Greek Cypriot administration, Nikos Christodoulides, said that the elections in Turkey should be seen as an opportunity to revive the dialogue in Cyprus.

Speaking to Euronews in Brussels, where he attended the EU summit, Christodoulides said that the process until the elections in Turkey on May 14 offers an opportunity for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Expressing that the EU should play a more active role in solving the Cyprus problem, the leader of southern Cyprus said: “I do not expect radical changes in Turkish foreign policy. However, the election of Erdoğan or the opposition leader as president creates a new situation.”

Noting that they want the UN role in the Cyprus process to continue, Christodoulides added that they hope to increase dialogue with Ankara after the elections in Turkey.
