Message of “Cooperation on Global Issues” from the EU and the UN
A written statement from the EU Council was made on the EU Leaders Summit session, which was also attended by UN Secretary General Guterres.
According to the statement, the UN and the EU stressed the importance of cooperation in addressing current pressing global challenges.
Underlining their shared commitment to multilateralism, the parties discussed the possibilities for closer cooperation for a peaceful, just and sustainable world.
The parties reaffirmed the full commitment of the EU countries to the UN Charter and principles while Russia’s war in Ukraine continues, and called on Russia to immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw from Ukraine.
Parties discussing the Black Sea Grains Initiative emphasized that it is effective in this regard alongside the EU’s own initiatives on food security.
CLIMATE CHANGE
Discussing the urgency of accelerating carbon emission reductions and promoting nature-based solutions in the face of the triple crises of climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss, the parties urged all stakeholders, in particular major economies, to reconsider and strengthen their identified contributions to COP28.
EU leaders and Guterres called for the reform of multilateral development banks to strengthen their role in tackling global challenges, especially in the session where they focused on development financing.
Noting the urgency of addressing the growing humanitarian funding gap, the parties supported access to new and non-traditional humanitarian donors, including international financial institutions.
The EU leaders and the UN Secretary General pledged to continue deepening bilateral relations. (AA)
