Hungary refuses to arrest visiting Putin Related articles

If Russian President Vladimir Putin visits Hungary, he will not be arrested. Despite the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Hungary will not cooperate in Putin’s arrest. This was stated by Gergely Gulyas, chief of cabinet of Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Hungary is one of the founding fathers of the International Criminal Court and has ratified the Treaty of Rome. But according to Gulyas, that doesn’t mean that Putin could be arrested if he enters Hungarian territory. “If we look at the Hungarian law, we see that we cannot arrest the Russian president, as the statute has not been introduced in Hungary.”

Even the Hungarian government “has not taken a position” on the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. The Chief of Staff, however, expressed his opinion on the ICC’s decision. “These decisions are not the happiest as they move things towards further escalation and not towards peace, this is my personal subjective opinion.”

Children deported illegally

The arrest warrant for Putin follows an International Criminal Court investigation into hundreds of illegally deported Ukrainian children. According to the ICC, there is “reasonable to believe” that Putin bears individual responsibility for this. Putin is only the third incumbent president to face an arrest warrant from the court. However, it is unlikely that he will actually be arrested.
