5 days to return gift jewelry to Bolsonaro
The Brazilian government has given former President Jair Bolsonaro 5 business days to return $3.2 million worth of undeclared jewelry found upon his return from a visit to Saudi Arabia in 2021.
The 9 members of the government observer mission voted yesterday for Bolsonaro to hand over the jewels to the state-owned Banco Federal Caixa Economica in the capital Brasilia. Official information was given to Bolsonaro’s lawyers and they were given 5 days to return the jewelry.
Earlier this month, the observation mission decided to examine all the gifts former Brazilian presidents received at the end of their terms. All the gifts Bolsonaro has received since he took office in 2019 will be examined.

The jewels, valued at 3.2 million dollars, were found in the backpack of one of Bolsonaro’s crew members at the Sao Paulo Guarulhos airport when he was returning from Saudi Arabia. Bolsonaro, for his part, argued through his lawyer Frederick Wassef that the jewels in question were denounced and that there was no irregularity in the matter.
It was also decided that Bolsonaro should return to his presidential collection some of the weapons he bought in the United Arab Emirates.
Bolsonaro, who is under investigation for “inciting” a raid on Brazil’s Congress, has been living in the United States since December 30, 2022. Bolsonaro is reported to have applied for a visa to stay longer in the US. (AUTOMOBILE BRITISH CLUB)
