EU leaders meet on the economy and Ukraine-based agenda

The EU Leaders Summit, which will begin tomorrow with the participation of the heads of state or government of the 27 EU member states, will last 2 days in Brussels.

The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, will also attend the first part of the meeting, which will be chaired by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. At the meeting, where important geopolitical issues such as the Russia-Ukraine War and global challenges such as climate change will be discussed, food security and the Expanded Black Sea Grain Corridor Agreement will be assessed.

The leaders will then move on to the Ukraine session. The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, will be connected to this part of the meeting by videoconference. Therefore, Zelenskiy will attend the EU summit for the eighth time. Zelenskiy had personally attended the last EU Leaders Summit.

In this session, various topics will be discussed, such as the continuation of EU support for Ukraine, various ammunition and weapons, especially 155mm cannon shells to be supplied to Ukraine, the financing of military support and the use of frozen Russian assets. .
The leaders will assess the security situation revealed by the Russia-Ukraine War, the measures to be taken and the latest developments.

The leaders will also address the issue of migration at the summit. In this context, southern EU members such as Italy, Greece and Spain are expected to bring the issue to the agenda and EU countries to demand more solidarity regarding irregular migrants.

WE WILL LOOK FOR WAYS TO INCREASE COMPETITIVENESS

The main theme of the summit will be the economic situation and competitiveness in Europe. The leaders will discuss ways to increase the competitiveness of European industry. The leaders will discuss what will be done to increase the EU’s competitiveness in the long term and to develop the single market.

Leaders will discuss ways to increase capacity for innovation, accelerate green and digital transformation, and stimulate investment. Synthetic fuels, known as e-fuels, and the future role of nuclear power are also expected to be among the topics the leaders will discuss.

At the EU leaders’ summit last month, they discussed the effects of the law in Europe, which includes comprehensive health, weather and tax regulations aimed at reducing inflation in the US. This law provides significant investment incentives in the US The EU fears that European manufacturers will lose their competitive advantage in the face of similar incentives and support in several countries such as the US and China. The leaders will evaluate measures to protect industrial investments.

In this session, the leaders will also discuss the future of trade policy in the current war and geopolitical environment.

THE STATE OF THE BANKING SECTOR WILL BE DISCUSSED

EU leaders will hold the Euro Summit on the second day. This meeting will also be attended by Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), and Paschal Donohoe, President of the Eurogroup.

The leaders who will discuss the economic and financial situation of the EU will discuss the coordination of fiscal policies. Fiscal rules that limit public spending and budget deficits of EU member states are also expected to be discussed at this session.

The leaders will exchange views on the possible effects of bank failures in the US and the banking crisis in Switzerland on the EU.
