Retired soldiers storm government buildings in Lebanon

In the Lebanese capital, Beirut, hundreds of protesters stormed government buildings to protest the economic crisis.

It should be noted that many retired soldiers were part of the crowd that walked with Lebanese flags in their hands along the road between the parliament and the seat of government. A brawl broke out between police and protesters trying to enter government buildings.

Lebanese police responded with tear gas to hundreds of protesters.

Noting that he served in the army for 32 years, Mohammed al-Khatibi, 59, told Reuters: “Our children are hungry. We left the army empty-handed. We don’t have health services, we don’t have savings. Our children cannot go to school. Prices are constantly increasing,” he said.

The Lebanese pound has lost more than 98 percent against the US dollar since 2019, hitting a record low yesterday.
