Sudden death of millions of fish caused panic

Death of millions of fish in Australia created panic

Millions of fish died yesterday in the river basin in the Australian state of New South Wales. Authorities announced that the fish died from lack of oxygen due to depletion of dissolved oxygen by organic materials accumulated in the river, whose water decreased due to the extreme heat wave in the region.

The surface of the Darling River in the town of Menindee was almost completely covered in dead fish.

After local people saw the dead fish in other streams and rivers in the basin, authorities issued a statement, confirming that large-scale deaths had occurred. Officials from the New South Wales Primary Industries Authority (NSW DPI) said: “It is estimated that millions of fish are affected, most of them Bone Herring (Bone Sea Bream).”

CAUSE OF HYPOXIC SEWAGE

DPI stated that organic materials such as leaves and pieces of wood brought by floodwaters (blackwater) accumulate in the river, and then extreme temperatures cause the water to subside, while the accumulated organic materials lower the dissolved oxygen in the water ( hypoxic sewage). ), leading to the death of the fish. It was also underlined that the excessive concentration of fish population in the river after the flood was also effective in fish kills.

“Billions of flood-breeding carp are now exceeding the carrying capacity of rivers in the basin as the floods recede, deoxygenating the water as they die and killing native fish,” Council officials said. State irrigation in a statement yesterday.

The temperature in the region reached 40 degrees. (DHA)
