The crisis in Israel grows: Civil war alert

“I fear that a civil war will break out here (in Israel),” former Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz said of growing protests across the country against the government’s controversial judicial reform.

The former Defense Minister and leader of the Blue-White Alliance, Gantz, spoke on his Twitter account regarding the growing demonstrations that have passed the tenth week against the government’s judicial reform.

Noting that no one would want a civil war in Israel, but the situation was bad, Gantz said: “I am afraid that a civil war will break out here (in Israel). These are not wrathful prophecies, but truthful words. “I live among my people and I see how they are tearing us apart,” he said.

THE JURISDICTIONAL REFORM TAKES THE PEOPLE TO THE STREETS

It has been 10 weeks since mass protests organized across the country against the “judicial reform” of the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, which restricts the powers of the judiciary, in Israel.

As the government moves step by step to pass the controversial judicial regulation in Parliament, protests are growing by tens of thousands of Israelis across the country, who consider that this “interferes with the independence of the judiciary.”

On March 15, Israeli President Isaac Herzog warned of a “civil war” over the government’s “judicial reform”, which dragged the country into discussions, and proposed a “People’s Bill” to overcome the crisis. .

Contrary to the government’s objective in judicial regulation, the bill includes articles that prevent the judicial mechanism from being changed in favor of the government, such as the fact that the majority in the Commission for the Appointment of Magistrates does not surrender to power and that the laws are approved with 80 votes instead of the absolute majority of 61 in Parliament.

Netanyahu also announced that they rejected Herzog’s bill on the grounds that it “continues the current status quo.” (AA)
