UN expands mission in Afghanistan
The draft resolution, which was voted on at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) session in Afghanistan, was unanimously accepted.
It was noted that the United Nations (UN) commitment to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of Afghanistan will continue in the resolution, which will continue to support the people of Afghanistan.
In the resolution, it was noted that the Taliban administration has not made progress in meeting the expectations of the United Nations Security Council, and that the full and equal participation of women in society and respect for human rights are of great importance. .
In the resolution, which called on UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to complete an “independent assessment” identifying key challenges in Afghanistan by November 17, 2023, the independent assessment was requested to include forward-looking recommendations.
The resolution announced that UNAMA’s mandate was extended until March 17, 2024.
UNAMA was established in 2002 by United Nations Security Council Resolution 1401 and its mandate has been extended each year.
UNAMA, which is based in Kabul, has a staff of approximately 1,200 people. (AA)
