Diplomats from Russia, Turkey, Syria and Iran are expected to meet in Moscow this week to prepare for a meeting between foreign ministers ahead of a potential presidential summit.
Citing an interview that Syrian leader Bashar Assad gave to the Russian news agency Novosti a day after his meeting with Putin, Euronews reported that he was ready to meet Erdogan on the condition that Turkish troops withdraw from northern Syria.
Referring to Turkey’s support for rebel groups opposing the Damascus regime, Assad added that Ankara should also “stop all support for terrorism” and said: “This is the only situation in which a meeting with Erdogan can take place.” .
In the interview, Assad said: “What is the point of such a meeting and why is it taking place if it will not bring the war in Syria to a final conclusion?” he asked.
