Netanyahu’s warning of Israeli intellectuals to Germany and England
According to the Israel Public Broadcasting Corporation (KAN), the petition, which included almost 1,000 signatures from leading Israeli writers, academics and intellectuals, including David Grossman, was sent to the German and British embassies in Israel.
The petition called on both Germany and the UK to cancel Prime Minister Netanyahu’s political visits to their countries.
Writers and academics said that Israel is in a dangerous phase of transformation from a flourishing democracy to an authoritarian government.
The signatories also warned that legal practices in the new era can lead to serious violations of the rights of citizens and the suppression of the freedoms of writers and artists.
In addition, some protesters called for Netanyahu to be prevented from reaching Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport for his trip to Germany.
Prime Minister Netanyahu is expected to travel to Berlin on Wednesday March 15 and then to England.
FRANCE WILL RESPOND
On the other hand, according to the KAN news, the French government announced that it will not contact Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich during his visit to Paris, which is expected next week.
In the news that Smotrich is coming to France for a conference, no information about the conference and its content was given.
The Israeli minister is in Washington to attend a leadership summit for an organization called “Israel Bonds,” which is primarily affiliated with the Israeli state and raises funds from the Jewish community in the US for Israeli companies.
During Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Smotrich’s visit to the United States after his remarks that the Palestinian city “Huwara should be wiped off the face of the earth,” no Washington administration official had assembled so far.
The Israeli press shared that the US administration boycotted Smotrich for his remarks and no one “wanted to shake his hand”. (AA)
