‘Sunak understands that a good relationship with the European Union is essential’ Related articles

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is today visiting Paris by President Emmanuel Macron. It is the first summit between the heads of government of the two countries in five years. According to UK correspondent Lia van Bekhoven, the country’s attitude towards the EU has changed. “A different wind has blown at 10 Downing Street since the departure of Boris Johnson and Liz Truss. Sunak’s visit is therefore a charm offensive,” says Van Bekhoven.

The country’s economy is in dire straits. Sunak understands that a good relationship with the European Union is crucial for economic recovery.

“The country wants to deny the right of asylum to any asylum seeker who enters illegally and sends him to a country like Rwanda.”

Both countries also want to send a signal to Moscow with this visit. France and the UK are Europe’s military superpowers and play a crucial role in Europe’s support for Ukraine. With this visit, the countries want to demonstrate that Russia cannot drive a wedge between them,’ says Van Bekhoven.

Asylum problem

But the British visit to the Elysée is not only symbolic. The UK now really wants to end illegal immigration. “The country wants to deny the right to asylum to any asylum seeker who enters illegally and sends him to a country like Rwanda. However, this is contrary to international law,” the correspondent points out.

The British prime minister would therefore like to conclude a migration deal with Macron, but Van Bekhoven does not see this happening. France will not accept British migrants. At most, Sunak will receive Macron’s promise that France will check its beaches more strictly for asylum seekers,” says Van Bekhoven.

I count

The British Parliament will vote on the “No-boats” bill on Monday. It is one of Sunak’s five priorities. “I expect the law to pass. Stopping illegal immigration was one of the main reasons for Brexit. There is therefore broad support for the law in the country,’ the correspondent said.
