Swedish chief negotiator Oscar Stenström noted that “a good sign” was perceived during the talks. Turkey is said to have acknowledged that Sweden and Finland have taken “concrete steps” in deals struck last summer to remove Turkish opposition to their NATO membership.
According to Stenström, the three countries will talk to each other soon, but a date has not yet been set. Talks between the three countries have been halted for weeks over a dispute between Turkey and Sweden. Turkey was angry, among other things, that Sweden hadn’t banned an anti-Islam protest.
Get close to Kurdish resistance groups
Turkey has indicated its willingness to admit Finland to NATO, but still has objections to Sweden’s approach to Kurdish resistance groups. Turkey may also request American F-35 fighter jets. According to Europe correspondent Stefan de Vries, the United States may agree, after a previous refusal.
In addition to the Turkish barriers, Hungary has long been against the admission of Sweden and Finland. But even that obstacle seems to have been overcome, after the visit of a Hungarian delegation to Sweden. It has been said that the admission of Sweden and Finland is “unconditionally” supported.
