Striking workers cut off electricity to the stadium where the Olympic Games will be held

According to news on French television channel BFMTV, energy sector workers raided power plants across the country as part of the strikes. Workers cut power to the Stade De France and the construction site of the village, where the 33rd Summer Olympic Games will take place and work continues between July 26 and August 11, 2024.

The workers, who also cut off power in surrounding shopping malls, declared Thursday “Electricity Savings Day.” After the incident was reported in the media, the security forces went to the plants and asked the workers to leave the area.

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced on January 10 that the pension reform, which was among Macron’s election promises, would be implemented.

Noting that in the country where the retirement age is 62, the statutory retirement age will gradually increase by 3 months every year and will increase to 64 in 2030, starting on September 1, Borne said that in 2027, a 43 year premium payment requirement will be entered to receive the full pension.

There have been multiple strikes and protests across the country since January 19 against the controversial reform.

The Senate had approved yesterday the most controversial article of the reform, which “provides to gradually increase the retirement age from 62 to 64 years.” (AA)
