Atomic Watchdog Fears Consequences of Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant Failure: ‘Our Luck Is Running Out’ Related Articles

The Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant has been shut down for the sixth time since the Russian invasion. Following the Russian missile attack, the plant was without power for hours and ran on diesel generators. Rafael Grossi, head of the United Nations (UN) nuclear observatory, fears the consequences of the disruption: “At some point our luck will run out.”

By mid-afternoon, the power station would be back on the grid. Grossi asks that action be taken to ensure safety at the site of the nuclear power plant. “This is the sixth time, I repeat: the sixth time, that the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant has lost all power and has to operate in emergency mode.” He points out that the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is the “largest in all of Europe”.

“Every time we roll a die, and if we let it go, one day our luck will run out”

Rafael Grossi, CEO of the United Nations Nuclear Observatory

The nuclear power plant has been in Russian hands for a year and Moscow says the rocket attacks have nothing to do with the power outage. However, Grossi fears the consequences of the constant bankruptcy of the plant. ‘What are we doing? How can we sit here in an office and allow that to happen? What do we do to prevent it? Every time we roll a die, and if we let it go, one day our luck will run out,” said the chief executive officer of the UN Nuclear Watchdog.
