Protests over femicides in Mexico

Large groups gathered in the square where the National Palace is located in the capital, Mexico City, and experienced tensions with the security forces.

Acting after a group set fire to the windows of the government palace, the police intervened with tear gas.

Firefighters dispatched to the scene were reported to have put out the fire and there were no injuries.

Groups that marched in several cities of the country protested the violence against women and called for the defense of women’s rights.

In the city of Ciudad Juárez, a group of women held a demonstration within the framework of March 8, International Women’s Day, due to the recent increase in femicides and human trafficking.

Demonstrations were also held in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Mexico.

Mexico is known as the country with the highest rate of femicide among Latin American countries. (AA)
