Double miracle of salvation: survived both the Turkey earthquake and the migrant disaster

The Italian press published the story of the young Afghans who managed to survive both the earthquakes that shook Turkey and the migration disaster in Italy.

According to the news in the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, the story that 29-year-old Kabir Ruhullah told the Italian police left everyone speechless. The Afghan man, who left Kabul for Iran in 2021, said that after working in a furniture store here for a year, he went to Turkey illegally and tried to go to Italy by boat.

Noting that he was caught at the same time, Ruhullah stated that he was sent to a detention center in Turkey and was caught in the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes here. Explaining that he planned to escape the damaged center and cross to Italy by boat, it was claimed that he, too, got caught up in the migrant disaster in the Mediterranean after the earthquake and managed to survive again.

The migration disaster, in which dozens of people lost their lives, sparked controversy across Europe.

At least 68 people, including 15 children, were killed when a ship carrying illegal immigrants capsized off Italy last week. The event, in which some 80 people were rescued and 47 are still missing, made a big impression in Europe as the new round of migrant tragedies.

One of the survivors, Kabir Ruhullah, also claimed that he paid 8,000 euros for the 5-day voyage of death from Turkey to the Italian coast. The young man’s story, which tells that he swam to shore clinging to a life jacket after the boat capsized, was described as a “miracle” in the Italian press.
