The streets are mixed after the train accident that shook Greece

Anger is growing in the country after the train crash in Larissa, Greece, which killed at least 57 people on Tuesday night.

College students returning from vacation were among those killed in the horrific accident in which dozens were injured.

At protests in the capital Athens and Thessaloniki last night, demonstrators holding the government and rail companies responsible for ignoring calls to take precautions over the accident carried banners reading “Our lives are valuable.”

Clashes broke out between security forces and protesters at protests attended by hundreds of people. The police intervened in the Thessaloniki protesters and arrested many people.

The country’s railways were privatized in 2017 as part of the bailout package. The railway unions, who decided to go on strike, accuse the government of not taking the necessary safety measures on the trains.
