Earthquakes in Turkey also caused concern in the neighbors… They carried out a drill
A comprehensive air rescue exercise has begun in Tehran, the capital of Iran, against the possibility of a magnitude 7 earthquake.
Ali Nasiri, president of the Tehran Crisis Prevention and Management Authority, who briefed the country’s media on the exercise, said the exercise was aimed at improving and coordinating the level of preparedness for a possible earthquake in Tehran. Pointing out that there may be large earthquakes in Tehran due to the presence of many fault lines, Nasiri said: “I hope this earthquake never happens, but we must be prepared for this possible situation because there may be earthquakes above the Richter scale in Tehran, which is found in various faults”.
Noting that the level of preparedness of air aid and rescue activities was measured in the exercise after a possible earthquake, Nasiri said, “27 military, civilian and aid and service organizations, especially the Army, Army Guard Revolutionary Police Department, Fire Department, participate in the exercise’. Nasiri stated that a large number of helicopters, planes and UAVs were used in the exercise.
‘COULD BE THE DISASTER OF THE CENTURY’
In his February 12 statement, Tehran City Council President Mehdi Çamran stated that an earthquake that could strike Tehran, like the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes that caused destruction in Turkey and Syria, could be the “disaster of the century.” and said: “There are other countries that experience earthquakes throughout the year, but there are other countries that experience earthquakes throughout the year, they do not witness such events because they have built their buildings correctly. If we do not build durable buildings, it is not clear what kind of disaster we will witness.”
In his February 26 statement, Nasiri stated that the exercise was designed based on a hypothetical scenario of an earthquake in northern Tehran with a magnitude of 7 on the Benefit Richter scale. (AA)
