Vietnam’s new leader revealed

The National Assembly of Vietnam reportedly elected Vo Van Thuong as the president of Vietnam.

The successor to Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who resigned as president of the Southeast Asian country Vietnam in January, has been announced. According to domestic media reports, Vietnam’s National Assembly in the capital Hanoi met in an extraordinary session.

Vo Van Thuong, candidate of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, was elected the country’s new president in the parliamentary vote. Speaking here, Thuong vowed to “fully comply with the country, the people and the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.”

Thuong is also recognized as the youngest of the 16 Politburo members, recognized as the top decision-maker in Vietnam. Thuong, 52, was born in the Vinh Long region in the south of the country and has a master’s degree in philosophy.

Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who took office as Prime Minister in 2016-2021, served as President from April 2021 to January 2023.

According to the Nikkei Asia news outlet, in Vietnam, with a population close to 100 million, the Presidency is largely considered a ceremonial position. (AA)
