Mummy 600 to 800 years old found in mail bag in Peru
A mummy was found in a mailbox along with three people drinking in an abandoned park in Puno, southern Peru.
Marco Antonio Ortega, spokesman for the Puno District National Police, said the mummy was found in a fetal position inside a red order box carried by a 26-year-old person.
Taking the mummy with him, Julio César Bermejo, in statements to the local press, describes the mummy, which he calls “Juanita”, as “my spiritual girlfriend”: “She is in my room at home. We sleep together. I’m looking at it”.
Police stated that Bermejo was in custody.
On the other hand, the Peruvian news agency Andina announced that the mummy is believed to belong to an adult man.
The mummy, which is listed as a national cultural asset, was removed under the supervision of the Peruvian Ministry of Culture.
Peru is home to hundreds of archaeological sites belonging to various civilizations that flourished before and after the Inca Empire.
In 2021, archaeologists found another mummy, estimated to be between 800 and 1,200 years old, in an area near the country’s capital, Lima. (AA)
