The manager of a train station has been detained in Greece after a train accident that killed at least 36 people and injured dozens.
The regional governor of Thessaly, Konstantinos Agorastos, announced that a passenger train traveling from Athens, the Greek capital, to Thessaloniki, in the north of the country, and a freight train collided near the city of Larissa. It was announced that passengers injured as a result of fires in some of the carriages after the collision were taken to hospital, and that approximately 250 train passengers were safely evacuated to Thessaloniki by buses.
The government source reported that the manager of a railway station in the city of Larisa was detained after giving a statement to the prosecutor. According to a police official, the prosecutor accused the station director of misconduct. The police officer stated that the defendant was charged with causing serious injury and mass death as a result of negligence.
According to the information provided by the police official, the station chief denied the charges against him and stated that the accident may have been caused by a technical problem. (Reuters)
