Nigerian presidential election results announced

The first result of the presidential elections held in Nigeria on February 25 and 26 was announced.

Ekiti State Election Commission representative Akeem Lasisi stated that former Lagos Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party, won first place with 201,494 votes.

Noting that Atiku Abubakar, leader of the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), received 89,554 votes, Lasisi said Labor Party (LP) candidate Peter Obi had 11,397 votes.

Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Nigerian Independent National Election Commission (INEC), stated that election results are collected late in most states.

Election results for the federal capital Abuja region as well as the remaining 35 states are expected to be announced at 11:00 am local time. Nigeria’s current president, Mohammed Buhari, was unable to run again as he served out his two-term term.

Among the 18 candidates for the presidential election, the pro-government APC candidate, Tinubu, the PDP leader, Abubakar, and the LP candidate, Obi, stand out. According to the constitution, the president, who is elected for 4 years, can serve a maximum of two terms. (AA)
