UN Security Council meets for Ukraine

The Security Council meeting entitled “Establishment of peace and security in Ukraine” was usually attended by foreign ministers.

Delivering a speech here, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres noted that the principles of the UN Charter are not just words on paper and that they constitute the mission of the UN.

“A year ago I insisted that the war not start here in Europe, for humanity, which could be the most terrible war of the century. I said it then, and I say it now. We must give peace a chance.” saying.

Emphasizing that Russia’s attack on Ukraine was a clear violation of the UN Charter and international law, Guterres pointed out that the war caused death and destruction.

“Life has become hell for the Ukrainian people,” Guterres said. he used the phrase.

Underlining that about 40 percent of the Ukrainian people need humanitarian aid and protection, Guterres also noted that the war has displaced many people and caused a crisis of a magnitude that has not been seen in Europe for a long time.

Guterres stated that basic infrastructure facilities were also attacked in Ukraine and, according to the World Health Organization, more than 700 attacks against health institutions were carried out.

“We need to build a peace in accordance with the UN Charter and international law,” said UN Secretary General Guterres. saying.

Stating that progress has been made in the context of the Black Sea Grain Corridor Agreement signed with the mediation of Turkey and the UN, Guterres said: “More than 20 million tons of food products were safely gathered with supply chains. Global supply with 700 ships. This lowers prices worldwide. Reminding all parties of the importance of continuing with this initiative, I reiterate my call for it to be extended beyond March 2023.” he said.

Stating that the UN is also making efforts to remove obstacles to Russian food and fertilizer exports, Guterres said: “These two initiatives point to the vital importance and value of international cooperation as the conflict continues.” saying.

“Since last year, the Security Council has held more than 40 Ukraine-specific sessions. The guns are talking right now, but we know that diplomacy is the only path to a just and lasting peace.” he used his statements.

“UKRAINE WILL CONTINUE TO RESIST”

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba said: “Ukraine will continue to resist, as it has done so far. (Russian President Vladimir) Putin will be defeated much sooner than he anticipated.” he said.

Expressing that Russian soldiers and officials will one day be held accountable for their actions, Kuleba said the international community must continue to support Ukraine.

Noting that there are discussions about the international community’s inability to focus on other problems due to the Ukraine-Russia war, Kuleba said: “The real problem in the world is Russia.” saying.

CONTROVERSY OF RESPECT

As the room rose after Kuleba called for a minute’s silence for those who lost their lives due to the Russian attacks, Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, took the floor and said: “All lives are precious, Take a moment of silence for all those who lost their lives”. saying.

After Nebenzya’s call, only the Russian delegation remained standing in the Council room.

“RUSSIA FIGHTS FOR THE CONQUEST, THE INDEPENDENCE OF UKRAINE”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, on the other hand, recalled that last year, before the war started, Russia had stated in the Council that it was preparing to attack, but Russia dismissed them as “allegations unfounded” and said: “A week later, Russia launched its full-scale invasion. But as a result of Ukraine’s strong defense, President Putin failed to achieve his goal of capturing Ukraine and incorporating it into Russia,” he said.

Stating that the Ukrainian people bravely fought for their independence and acted in unity, Blinken said that the international community also united and condemned Russia many times.

Stating that Russian President Putin is trying to weaponize hunger, Blinken said: “The Black Sea Grains Initiative, which was started by Secretary General Guterres and Turkey, lowered food prices around the world by remove the Russian barrier to Ukrainian exports.” he said.

Stating that when Putin tried to use energy as a weapon, Blinken said: “Of course, no country was hit as hard by the war as Ukraine, but almost every country felt the pain. Despite this, countries continue to support Ukraine.” saying.

Noting that “a world order in which the strong dominate the weak” will emerge if basic UN values are not respected, Blinken noted that the UN was established to end and prevent this.

Stating that he is an aggressor and a victim in this war, Blinken said: “Russia is fighting for conquest, Ukraine for independence. One man started this war, Vladimir Putin, and one man can end it.” he used his statements. (AA)
