Critical UN decision: Russia called for immediate withdrawal from Ukraine

Russia, Belarus, Mali, Syria, Nicaragua, Eritrea, North Korea voted “no” while Cuba, Algeria, Armenia, Bangladesh, Bolivia, China, India, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Sudan, Uganda and Vietnam they abstained, including each other. countries.

CALL TO JUST PEACE
In the decision, in which more than 50 countries, including Turkey, are co-hosts, it was emphasized that in accordance with the UN charter, all members must refrain from resorting to the threat or use of force against territorial integrity. or political independence. from another state.
In the resolution, which stated that the threat of the use of force or land acquired by force would not be legally recognized, it was noted that a just and lasting peace would contribute to international peace and security.
The resolution condemned the terrible destruction caused by Russia’s attack on Ukraine on a humanitarian scale and drew attention to the negative effects of the war on global food, energy, nuclear and environmental security.
In the resolution, which urged all member states and international organizations to increase their diplomatic efforts to achieve a “comprehensive, just and sustainable” peace in Ukraine, the commitment to sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity by extending to territorial waters in accordance with the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine was affirmed.

“We reiterate our call on the Russian Federation to unconditionally, unconditionally and urgently withdraw its military forces from the entire Ukrainian territory and end the conflict,” the resolution read. statements were included.
In the decision, which required the parties to the conflict to comply with all their obligations under international humanitarian law, it was emphasized that the safety of civil society and the unimpeded transportation of humanitarian aid must be guaranteed.
The decision stressed that acts that are considered crimes under international law must be determined and punished through independent investigations.
DECISIONS OF THE UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Due to Russia’s permanent membership in the UN Security Council, it became difficult for member states to make decisions there. For this reason, UN members brought decisions on Russia to the UN General Assembly, although they are not binding.
On March 2, 2022, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution condemning Russia’s aggression with 141 votes in favor. Also on March 24, the General Assembly passed a resolution condemning Russia for causing a “terrible humanitarian situation” and on the “protection of civilians in Ukraine and the provision of humanitarian aid” with 140 votes in favor.
The General Assembly decided to remove Russia from the UN Human Rights Council on April 7, 2022.
While the UN General Assembly decided not to recognize the four regions captured by Russia on October 12, 2022 by a majority vote, on November 14, 2022 it adopted the resolution calling on Russia to pay war reparations to Ukraine. (AA)
