Greece concerned about the influx of migrants at the Turkish border after the earthquake

The Greek media wrote that after the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş, the Athens government was very concerned about a new wave of migrants at the Turkish border.

According to the news in the Kathimerini newspaper, the Greek government entered a state of alert after the earthquakes that caused great destruction in 11 provinces of Turkey and northern Syria. It was noted that illegal immigration attempts at the Turkish border began to increase after the earthquakes.

It was claimed that illegal immigrants generally chose the sea route due to the tightening of police measures at Greece’s land border, with both Turks and Syrians attempting to cross into Greece illegally. In the news, it was pointed out that the hot weather and poverty that grew with the earthquake could significantly increase illegal immigration in the spring months.

Kathimerini also recalled that the efforts of the Greeks to help the victims of the earthquake smoothed relations on the Ankara-Athens line, which has experienced great tension in recent years. On the other hand, the newspaper suggested that President Tayyip Erdogan could use immigrants as a weapon against Europe before the elections, as he did before.
