The United States is concerned about controversial bills, which give parliament much more power over the administration of justice. Ambassador Tom Nides told CNN the reforms make it more difficult for Americans to support Israel in its policies in the region. This could have implications for Netanyahu’s attempts to address Iran’s nuclear program internationally or for closer ties with Saudi Arabia.

Big things

“The prime minister tells us he wants to achieve big things,” Nides said. “So I’ve told him a hundred times that we can’t spend time on that sort of thing while his garden is on fire.” He wants the government to examine the plans again and sit down with the opponents to reach a compromise.

Netanyahu has yet to respond, but a minister in his government is furious. “The ambassador himself has to brake. Mind your own business.’

In recent days, thousands have protested plans that, for example, allow parliament to override a simple majority court ruling. Parliament will also have much more influence over the appointment of senior judges.
