Colombian President Petro Defends Controversial Health Reform
Addressing his supporters from the balcony of the Casa de Nariño in the Presidential Palace, Petro said that the health reform law presented to Congress is an important step towards building social welfare in the country.
“We have seen how democracy has been degraded, we have seen how pregnant women are cared for in poor areas and neighborhoods of Colombia without doctors or nurses, we have also seen how we have become accustomed to malnutrition,” said Petro. .
Emphasizing that universal rights are the right of all who live in Colombia, Petro said; He pointed out that not all citizens of the country can access the doctor, surgery and medicine.
Explaining that thanks to the reforms, especially the poor will have many opportunities, Petro said: “It is important for a young person to go to university, for an old man to get a pension and a bowl of soup in a decent place, for a worker to have a normal life and constant access to a doctor anywhere in the country does it,” he said.
Pointing out that Colombia has never had a preventive health system, Petro recalled that this situation arose prominently during the Covid-19 process.
Petro thanked the crowd that gathered to support the health reform and stated that they would bring health services to the whole country.
It was shared that some NGOs, representatives of political parties and health unions that oppose President Petro’s health reform will hold demonstrations throughout the country today. (AA)
