Biden calls for gun law reform
US President Joe Biden has released a written statement on the gun attack at Michigan State University that killed 3 students.
Noting that his prayers with his wife, Jill Biden, are with those who lost their lives and their families, Biden said he spoke with Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last night and instructed her to provide whatever support is needed.
Noting that many communities in the US are at risk of armed attack, Biden stressed that they have taken gun law action to combat this problem, but more needs to be done. Stating that Congress must take action to prevent the attacks in question, Biden called on lawmakers to do so.
Biden said “common gun law reforms” should be made, including measures like background checks for gun sales, bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, closing gaps in gun verification systems background checks, ensure weapons are stored securely. and remove immunity from arms dealers who place weapons in public places, he stressed.
Noting that the latest attack coincided with the anniversary of the attack on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14, 2018, with an “AR-15” type automatic weapon, killing 17 people, Biden He emphasized that he will continue to take measures to prevent armed violence.
Biden also reported that the Department of Justice today allocated $231 million in funding to spend on “red flag” programs, as well as centers that deal with mental health and substance use and veterans, as part of the bills crisis response and prevention. Biden argued that this fund, which will be implemented in 49 states and territories, will save lives by reducing gun violence.
