Japanese Geoscientist Kaneda: I’ve Never Experienced 2 Big Earthquakes On The Same Day Before
Chancellor of GTU University, Prof. Dr. Haji Ali Mantar presided. While the academics attended the meeting, precautions to take in case of possible earthquakes were discussed.
Geoscientist from Kagawa University in Japan. Dr. Yoshiyuki Kaneda stated that he was surprised by the fact that 2 large earthquakes occurred on the same day and said, “I have never experienced 2 such large earthquakes on the same day, I don’t know. In Japan, something similar happened in 2016 in Kumamoto. There was a 6.6 magnitude earthquake, 2 days later another 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit and caused damage, but not as big as the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. I have never seen anything like this before. In 1854, an earthquake struck Nankai on the seabed. A second earthquake occurred 30-32 hours later, creating a huge tsunami. These are the two back-to-back earthquakes that I know of,” he said.
“WE HAVE LEARNED THE LESSONS FROM THE PAST GREAT EARTHQUAKE”
Explaining that they took important precautions by learning lessons from earthquakes that occurred in Japan in the past, Kaneda said, “Both Turkey and Japan, both countries are vulnerable to disasters, and earthquakes occur very frequently. But we have learned lessons from the big earthquakes in Japan in the past. Especially in the 1995 Kobe earthquake, almost all the buildings were destroyed in Kobe. We suffered extensive damage in the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. But we saw what was wrong here. We understood the importance of building earthquake resistant buildings and buildings with isolators. We put them into practice. “I think the most important thing is to implement the necessary things after the lessons learned,” he said.
“PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION INSURANCE REQUIREMENT”
Explaining that it is important for engineers to be subject to various competencies to construct buildings in Turkey, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at the GTU Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Bülent Akbaş also said:
* “Engineering practices and contracting services are problematic. A two-step solution is possible. We can quickly fix all these bugs in a very short time. In Turkey, we need to bring an understanding of competent engineering as it is practiced in all other civilized and advanced countries. We are not to give signing authority in any way to our friends who have only completed 4 years of college. After passing certain exams, after gaining certain experience, they must obtain a signature authorization.
*We need to bring professional highlights insurance. Both the engineers, the companies that carry out the work control, and the companies that provide contracting services, have the absolute and absolute obligation to contract professional qualification insurance. As soon as you activate the insurance business, many bugs will be automatically removed. We saw it in Hatay, the same contractor built many buildings and they were all demolished.
* If we ask that person for professional competence insurance, this person will not be able to do construction in any way from now on. Because no company can insure this person. Suddenly these people are forced to retire from the construction business on their own. The same is true for engineers. Therefore, we absolutely have to bring professional insurance and hire competent engineering” (DHA)
