National emergency declared in New Zealand

The New Zealand government has declared a national emergency following Hurricane Gabrielle, which battered the north of the country, causing widespread flooding and destruction.

Speaking to the press in the capital Wellington, Emergency Management Minister Kieran McAnulty announced that the New Zealand government declared a state of emergency to support hurricane-affected areas and provide additional resources. “This disaster is an extraordinary situation that can pose a real threat to the lives of New Zealanders,” McAnulty said.

New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins told reporters that army units are in the area to help evacuate those affected by the hurricane and distribute emergency supplies.

Noting that many families were displaced and there was extensive destruction across the country, Hipkins said: “We will need some time to determine exactly what happened. When we get to that point, we will help do the necessary cleanup,” he said.

It was indicated that the national emergency covers 6 northern regions, including Auckland, one of the largest cities in the country.

Hurricane Gabrielle caused flooding and landslides in these regions, knocking out power to more than 60,000 homes. In Auckland, where the hurricane had a negative impact on life, flights were ground to a halt and education was disrupted in many schools the day before.

New Zealand Airlines announced that more than 500 domestic and international flights were canceled and around 10,000 international passengers were affected by this situation. (AA)
