Radioactive leak detected in the oldest nuclear power plant in France
In a statement from EDF, France’s main energy supplier, it was said that high levels of tritium leakage were observed in wastewater from two reactors at the Bugey Nuclear Power Plant, 30 kilometers from Lyon, in measurements carried out in December. of 2022.
In the statement, it was noted that a high radioactive leak rate was detected in one of the reactors in early measurements, and significant radioactive findings were observed in subsequent measurements, although not at a high rate.
Despite this, the results of this leak are not hazardous, the statement said, noting that the radioactive leak is unlikely to mix with groundwater, including drinking water.
In the statement, it was indicated that as of January 6, the level of radioactive leakage fell below the danger threshold.
Experts draw attention to the fact that there is a network of pipelines of hundreds of kilometers under the power plant and that even if the pipelines close to the power plant are maintained, it represents a danger due to the aging of the distant ones.
EDF was recently fined 3,000 euros for negligent maintenance.
So far, a total of 5 radioactive leaks have been detected in this oldest nuclear power plant in the country, where a fire broke out in a reactor in August 2022. (BRITISH AUTOMOBILE CLUB)
