Financial Times Erdogan analysis: They reminded me of last year’s words

As Turkey suffered from earthquakes and aftershocks, the epicenter of which was Kahramanmaraş, the Financial Times, one of the leading media organizations in England, wrote a remarkable analysis.

The newspaper’s correspondents in Turkey, Laura Pitel and Adam Samson, used the headline “Recep Tayyip Erdogan: Turkey’s President Faces Disaster” and said: “As Turkey’s leader prepared for the toughest election, a a devastating earthquake”.

The image of President Erdoğan was used in the Financial Times report.

The article recalls President Erdoğan’s speech in which he praised urban transformation projects on the anniversary of the earthquake on August 17, 1999. In Erdoğan’s speech at that time, it was emphasized that it was not in his human hands prevent disasters, but it was in their own hands and responsibilities to take action against the devastating effects of disasters. In the Financial Times report, Erdogan was also claimed to have said: “As humans, it is not in our hands to prevent disasters, but it is in our hands to take action to reduce the devastating effect.”

“ERDOĞAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE CRISES TO HIS ADVANTAGE BUT…”

“The president of Turkey is now accused of failing to do so and has faced huge humanitarian crises. The country’s biggest disaster before occurred in the same region about 100 years ago and 19,000 people lost their lives. Erdogan was claimed to be struggling with criticism over the slow arrival of aid to the region, commenting: “This happened at a time when he was preparing for the most difficult election campaign.”

In the Financial Times news, “Erdogan has managed to take advantage of crises in the past. But some political scientists say that he is out of his control.

On the other hand, it was claimed that there was also unrest within the AKP. “Some AKP officials were even outraged by the horrifying death toll and their government’s failure to protect Turkey,” the Financial Times analysis said. Speaking to the newspaper, an AKP official said: “Why don’t such tragedies occur in earthquake-prepared countries like Japan and Chile?” While this person was claimed to be an AKP member who lost many family members in the region, he was also reported to have said, “People are asking this question now and this voice will become louder.”
