Bauer believes that weapons are being supplied after all, which can be proven on the basis of the UN charter. We have a moral obligation to help a country that is trying to defend itself. We do this not only as NATO member states, but with a total of 50 countries. Such support may be provided in accordance with the United Nations treaty.”
Putin needs public support
Bauer understands that Russia concludes that NATO is seeking a conflict. ‘Putin needs this too to maintain support among his own people. However, I recommend an example of aggressive action by NATO towards Russia,’ says Bauer. “All of the aggressive actions in recent years have come from Russia.”
“Great consequences if Russia wins”
That is why Bauer also considers it important to support Ukraine. “If Russia wins this, it will have much bigger consequences than just for Ukraine,” Bauer says. If the Russians stop the war in Ukraine today, the war will be over. But if the Ukrainians stop today, they will lose their country. That’s the big difference.’

“Ukrainians want to continue”
The desire to continue is therefore great, even among the Ukrainian population, the admiral believes. “Around 95 percent of the population told Zelensky: ‘Go ahead and don’t stop. Also, don’t negotiate, which would make us admit that much of the territory conquered by Russia remains in Russian hands.” They want to reclaim what is theirs, despite all the casualties, injuries and great destruction in the country.
