Moldovan government resigns
Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita announced the resignation of her government after 18 months in power, filled with difficulties and economic turmoil from the war in Ukraine.
“I believe in the people of Moldova. I believe in Moldova,” said Gavrilita, adding: “I believe we will overcome all difficulties.”
Moldova, one of the former Soviet republics with a population of 2.5 million, faces problems such as high inflation and a growing population of Ukrainian refugees. Moldova also experienced power outages after Russian attacks on energy infrastructure in Ukraine and was unable to shake off its reliance on Russian natural gas.
Demonstrations were held in the capital Chisinau due to rising prices, especially the price of Russian natural gas.
Gavrilita’s pro-European Union Movement and Solidarity Party won the elections, entering it promising to crack down on corruption, winning a majority in parliament and forming the government in August 2021. (Reuters)
