5.1 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia: 4 dead

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the eastern Indonesian province of Papua, killing four people.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) announced that a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Jayapura, on the north coast of Papua. In the earthquake that occurred at a depth of 22 kilometers, 4 people died as a result of the overturning of the “floating restaurant” into the sea.

Abdul Muhari, spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), announced that the bodies of those who lost their lives have been removed from the place where they were trapped under the “floating restaurant”. Muhari claimed that some buildings and health facilities in the region were damaged.

In the Aceh region of Indonesia, after the 2004 earthquake, approximately 170,000 people lost their lives. On September 28, 2018, the magnitude 7.5 earthquake and tsunami that struck Palu Bay on the island of Sulawesi; It affected the Donggala, Palu and Sigi regions, and 4,340 people lost their lives.

In the magnitude 5.6 earthquake that struck on November 21, 2022, 18 kilometers southwest of the city of Ciranjang, in the Indonesian province of West Java, 331 people lost their lives and nearly 600 were injured.

Located on the seismic and volcanic belt called the “Pacific Ring of Fire”, Indonesia is one of the countries most affected by natural disasters in the world. (AA)
